Mobsby was born on 17 August 1859 at Hove, Sussex, England, and came to Queensland in 1883 and later lived at Indooroopilly. Appointed an artist and photographer to the Department of Agriculture and Stock, Mobsby had studied art and design at South Kensington and at the School of Art, Brighton. He had diplomas and certificates from the London Chamber of Commerce, the City and Guilds Institute, the Cripplegate Institute and the South Kensington School of Arts. In San Francisco in 1915 he did a motion picture certificate course. Prior to joining the Department of Agriculture and Stock, Mobsby was an instructor in Decoration and Photography at the Brisbane Technical College. Henry Mobsby was involved with the Franco-British Exhibition--London 1908; The Panama-Pacific Exposition, San Francisco--1915; The British Empire Exhibition, Wembley--1924-25; Australian Natives exhibition, Melbourne and the Peace Exhibition, Adelaide--c. 1920; New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, Dunedin--1925-26. Mobsby gave many lectures on Queensland, its history, products, scenery, buildings, etc., illustrated by lantern slides. He also made a number of radio broadcasts in the 1920s.
