Harvard School of Public Health
The Harvard School of Public Health began as a cooperative program between Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The School for Health Officers of Harvard University and M.I.T. opened in 1913 as the first formally organized school of public health in the U.S. The name of the school was changed to Harvard-M.I.T. School of Public Health in 1918, and courses in industrial hygiene were offered in that year. In 1922 the school was reorganized under the direction of Harvard which assumed sole responsibility for the school in order to secure the endowment necessary to place it on a degree-granting basis. Milton J. Rosenau, professor of preventive medicine and hygiene at Harvard Medical School from 1909 to 1935, was one of the founders and a primary influence in curriculum development through the first period of the school's existence. David L. Edsall served as dean of both the Harvard Medical School and School of Public Health until 1935; Cecil K. Drinker was dean from 1935 to 1942.
