Stephen Prokofievitch Timoshenko, a world-renowned authority on theoretical and applied mechanics, was educated at the Munich Polytechnic Institute and at the University of Gottingen. He taught at the Polytechnic Institute of Kiev (1907-11) and the Polytechnic Institute of St. Petersburg (1912-17), before fleeing Russia for Yugoslavia.
