Eloise Jarvis McGraw was born on December 9, 1915 in Houston to Genevieve Lucinda and Loy Hamilton Jarvis. From an early age Eloise expressed an interest in writing. She graduated from Classen High School in Oklahoma City in 1933 and attended Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, where she majored in art. In 1940 she married William Corbin McGraw.
