Joseph Lee Robinson was born on July 10, 1893, to John and Mary (Becker) Robinson in Omega, Oklahoma. He received his B.S. (1916) from Oklahoma A&M College (Oklahoma State University), and his M.S. (1918) and Ph.D. (1933) in plant physiology and crop production from Iowa State College (University).
