Peers, William R. (William Raymond), 1914-

William Raymond Peers (b. June 14, 1914, Stuart, Iowa-d. Apr. 6, 1984), U.S. Army officer, was commissioned in the Army in 1938. During World War II, he was operations officer with the OSS in Burma; commander, Detachment 101; and deputy director, China Theater. After the War he served as an intelligence instructor at the Command and General Staff College and was director of CIA training. During the 1950s, he was a member of the Army General Staff for Operations and assigned to U.S. Forces Europe HQ. He also was commander, 1st Battle Group, 5th Infantry, in Germany, from 1957 to 1959. In the 1960s he held several positions on the Joint Chiefs Staff and later served as commanding general, 4th Infantry Division, and deputy commanding general, I Field Force, in Vietnam. For the remainder of his career until the time of his death, General Peers was assigned to Army HQ in Washington, D.C.
