Gertrude Block (originally Bloch) was born in Mannheim, Germany in 1893 to Salomon Bloch and Bertha Buhler. She immigrated to England in 1939 and then to the U.S. in 1940 and settled in California. While in Germany, she trained as both a nurse and kindergarten teacher.

Gertrude Eisendrath received a degree from the Lowthorpe School of Horticulture and Landscape Design in Groton, Mass. in 1917. She apprenticed with Ellen Biddle Shipman in Mass. and then moved to Chicago in 1921. In 1942 she married George Kuh. From the 1930s to the 1970s she designed at least 400 gardens and landscapes.
