Allen, Mel, 1913-1996
Mel Allen began broadcasting for CBS in 1937, and covered New York Yankees' games from 1940 until 1964, where he worked with Red Barber and Dizzy Dean. He covered numerous World Series and All Star games in the 1950s and 1960s. From 1977, he worked on the television show, This week in baseball, and began doing New York Yankees games on cable in 1985. He won the Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting in 1978. He died in 1996.
