George Beard was an early Utah artist, photographer, and legislator. He owned the Coalville Cooperative. Later he sold it to his son, Paul, who changed the name to Paul's Grocery Store.

The Galveston Wharf Company was founded in 1854 as the Galveston Wharf & Cotton Press Company. It operated the ports as well as railway lines and locomotives that connected the Galveston harbor to other railroads in Texas. The company was the centerpiece of a longstanding law suit between the City of Galveston and the Galveston Corporation, the controlling interest in the company.
