William Pettigrew was born in Scotland and arrived on the 'Fortitude' in 1849. A surveyor, in 1853 he built the first steam sawmill on the Brisbane River. He had partnerships in mills at Dundathu, Maroochy and Maryborough. He was an alderman in the City Council for some twenty years, and was Mayor of Brisbane 1870-71.
