Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company

The Ahrens and Ott Manufacturing Company was established in 1865 by Theodore Ahrens, Sr. and Henry Ott. It started as a plumbing and pipe fitting business then turned to the manufacture of wholesale plumbing and steamfitting materials. In 1886, the business was reorganized as the Ahrens and Ott Manufacturing Company with Theodore Ahrens, Jr. as the treasurer and general manager. A small plant was built on 16th and Arbegust. Three years later the plant moved to 6th and Hill streets in Louisville. In December, 1899, the company merged with the Dawes and Myler Co., the Standard Manufacturing Co., and six other plants to form the Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Co., with its headquarters in Pittsburgh. Theodore Ahrens, Jr. served as the company's first president; a post he held for thirty years.
