As a student of textile science in Galashiels in 1913 it is likely that Adam Anderson would have been attending the South of Scotland Central Technical College, which had opened in 1909 in purpose-built premises. Grants had become available for technical education and this had led to the development of textile studies. Galashiels had been a long-time centre for the textile industry in Scotland.

Anderson was born in Kincardine-on-Forth in 1780. From 1809 he was the Rector of Perth Academy where he advocated inclusion of chemistry and science in the curriculum. While there he supervised the construction of Perth Gasworks and was then requested by Perth Water Commissioners to design and construct a means of maintaining a clean water supply for Perth.
