Anna Vertrees Love Ackerly was born near Johnson City, Tennessee and studied Home Economics at Tusculum College, Tennessee. She married Raymond S. Ackerly and came to live on the family farm at Crystal Run, Orange County, New York. She helped form the Orange County Home Bureau and was a 4-H leader. Her husband Raymond, son Robert, and daughter Helen all attended Cornell University. Vertrees Ackerly was on several Home Bureau boards and taught many informal home economics courses. She was also an active member of the Associated Country Women of the World.

Ackerly was the daughter of country doctor Charles S. Love and Ida Painter Love. She received a B.A. in home economics from Tusculum College (Tenn.) in 1916. In 1928 she helped organize the Orange County (N.Y.) Home Bureau; she was active in the New York State Federation of Home Bureaus for the next forty years.
