Monks of the Meerschaum.
Biographical notes:
Monks of the Meerschaum was a social club formed in 1859 after Jesse Y. Burk, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, drew a picture of a monk with a pipe suspended from his girdle on the fly-leaf of his textbook. His friend, Edwin F. King, after seeing the drawing, suggested a brotherhood be formed called the "Monks of the Meerschaum." Burk went on to become secretary of the Board of Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania.
Other members of the club included Samuel Pennypacker (former Governer of Pennsylvania); Jacob William Schuckers; George F. Bensell; Edmund B. Bensell; Chester N. Farr, Jr.; Reverend Charles Logan; Addison B. Burk; William P. Fodell; Edward A. Stockton; George S. Jones; Nathan T. Folwell; John B. Moffitt; William S. Kochersperger; and G. Morgan Eldridge.
