Albert attended but was expelled from the Texas Military Institute in Bastrop and later attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he met his future wife, Jane Lewis Maury (1858-1954). Albert spent a year in England and France before marrying Jane on 1877 March 20. Jane Maverick was long involved in San Antonio civic affairs and a charter member of the Conservation Society, Battle of Flowers Association, and other organizations. She took up painting at age sixty-five and the Art League met at her home, the Sunshine Ranch. She died on 1954 February 15 at age ninety-five.
