Biographical notes:

Sumner Chilton Powell was an author and historian.

He was born in Northampton, Mass., Oct. 2, 1924. Powell received the B.A. degree from Amherst in 1946 and his Ph. D. from Harvard in 1956. Powell taught in boys' schools in New England and was an instructor in history at Yale University (1960-1962) and Iona College (1964-1967). Powell was the author of several historical works. His major work was "Puritan Village, The Formation of a New England Town" for which he spent nearly six years collecting material from local records, archives, and private collections in England and Massachusetts. For this important study of the origins of Sudbury, Mass., Sumner Chilton Powell was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1964.
