Biographical notes:

Remedios Varo (b. Dec. 16, 1908, Anglés, Spain–d. Oct. 8 1963, Mexico City, Mexico) surrealist painter working in Spain, Paris, and Mexico. She entered Escuela de Bellas Artes (Madrid, Spain) at 15 and studied under Manuel Benedito. Varo relocated to Paris during the Spanish Civil War and was a member of the surrealist scene there. When the Germans invaded France in the 1930s, she escaped to Mexico and became a player in the Mexican surrealist art scene. There she formed ties with many famous artists such as Leonora Carrington, Dora Maar, Roberto Matta, Wolfgang Paalen, Max Ernst, Gunther Gerzso, Kati Horna, José Horna, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Jean Nicolle, and Marc Chagall.
