Sabato Morais was born on April 13, 1823 in the northern Italian city of Leghorn (Livorno). Morais received rabbinical training in Italy and was ordained in 1845. He left Italy for London in 1845, and in 1851 he settled in Philadelp.
was elected Hazan of the Congregation Mikveh Israel.
Morais married Clara Esther Weil in 1855 and they had seven children. He supported a variety of causes and was a strong supporter of Lincoln during the Civil War. He corresponded with important Jewish leaders such as Isaia Luzzatto,
Luzzatto, Emmanuel Veneziani, Bernard Felsenthal, and Moses Montefiore. Morais was also interested in Jewish higher education and he founded the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York in 1886.
Morais participated in the Alliance Israelite Universelle and spoke out for humanitarian causes. He was renowned as a master of Hebrew literature and as a translator. He died in Philadelphia on November 12, 1897 at the age of 74.
