Since June, 1894, with the hiring of John Schonenberger, the Newberry Library has maintained an in-house bindery.
The Bindery reported to the Financial Agent and Controller until 1964 when it was transfered to the newly formed Technical Department (named 1965) headed by conservator Paul Banks. From 1970-1975, fine binding remained Banks' responsisbility, while production binding under John Dean was supervised by the Associate Librarian. In 1975, the Bindery was returned to the new Conservation Department, where it remained until 1992, when it was renamed the Collections Conservation Studio. From 1906 through the 1940's, the Bindery performed significant outside work, chiefly for the John Crerar Library and other Chicago institutions; minor outside work continued into the 1980's.
