Benjamin Adams was Chief of the Circulation Department (renamed the Branch Libraries in 1966) of The New York Public Library from 1909-1918. He had served as Assistant Chief since 1904, and prior to that worked for Brooklyn Public Library.

Prior to that he was Chief of the Order Division, and before joining NYPL in 1914 worked for the Library of Congress (1901-1902), the Carnegie Library (1902-1908) and the Tacoma Public Library (1908-1913). Hopper was Director of The New York Public Library from 1941 until his retirement in 1946.

Esther Johnston was Chief of the Circulation Department (renamed the Branch Libraries in 1966) of The New York Public Library from 1947-1951. Prior to that she was a librarian at the Seward Park and Fordham branches, and Head of Central Circulation. From 1942-1946 she was Supervisor of Branches, and served as Acting Chief of the Circulation Department during the military service of Chief Francis R. St. John.

Arthur Bostwick (1860-1942) was Head Librarian of the New York Free Circulating Libraries from 1895-1897. In 1901 he was hired by John Shaw Billings, first Director of The New York Public Library, to establish NYPL's Circulation Department (renamed the Branch Libraries in 1966). He was Chief of the Circulation Department until 1909 when he left to become head of the St. Louis Public Library.

Francis R. St. John was Chief of the Circulation Department (renamed the Branch Libraries in 1966) of The New York Public Library from 1941-1946, with a period of absence during military service. In 1947 he became Director of the Veteran's Administration Libraries.
