Dr. William Shippen (1736-1808) was a physician in Philadelphia (from 1762) and later a founder and president (1805-1808) of the college of Physicians of Philadelphia. He was also the first professor of anatomy, surgery and midwifery of the University of Pennsylvania (1791). John Morgan (1735-1789) was also a Philadelphia physician and served as Director-General of hospitals and Physician-in-Chief of the American Continental Army from 1775 until removed by Congress 9 January 1777. He was exonerated of neglect and wrongdoing by Washington and by Congress. Benjamin Rush (1745?-1813) was a Philadelphia physician and political leader, a member of the Continental Congress, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and a surgeon in the Continental Army (1777-1778).
