According to information supplied by the donor, Alexander D. Kelly was a son of Capt. James Kelly, an officer in Washington's Army. He settled in Fauquier County, Virginia, was the executor of many estates, and served as a member of the House of Delegates.

John Parke Custis was the adopted son of George Washington.
