Will, active 1785-1799 (Muddy Hole Farm)
Biographical notes:
Will was an enslaved man, owned by Martha Washington as part of her first husband's Estate, and lived at Mount Vernon Estate in Virginia. He was the son of old Doll at the Mansion House Farm and the uncle of Tom Davis at the Mansion House Farm (see George Washington Diaries, December 19, 1785, and Letter, George Washington to Anthony Whitting, February 3, 1793). He served as overseer at both Muddy Hole and Dogue Run Farm, and was married to Kate who lived and worked at Muddy Hole Farm.
Will was moved to Muddy Hole Farm in late 1785, to take up the job of overseer, after Davy Gray, another enslaved man, was transferred to River Farm. As sometime between 1785 and 1790 it appears that Will was moved off Muddy Hole Farm, mentioned in a letter from George Augustine Washington to George Washington, March 26, 1790. By 1792, Will appears to have been the overseer at Dogue Run, while his wife Kate was at Muddy Hole Farm.
