History notes:

Chapter 234, Laws of 1903, created the Banking Department. Supervision of state chartered banks, begun in 1852 under the Bank Comptroller, had been the responsibility of the State Treasurer from 1870-1895 and of the Bank Examiner from 1895-1903. The Department was under the management and control of the Commissioner of Banking, except during the years 1933-1947 when a three-member Banking Commission replaced the Commissioner. Under state government reorganization in 1967, the Banking Department was renamed the Office of the Commissioner of Banking (see WIHV85-A2181), but retained its status as an independent agency. In Wisconsin State Archives' database entries, the above form of agency name is used for all appropriate records dating 1903-1967.

The Department administered state laws relating to commercial state banks, mutual savings banks, trust company banks, credit unions, foreign exchanges, loan companies, and sales finance companies. Between 1937 and 1939, it also regulated the sale of securities.
