A renovation program was undertaken by Warden M. W. Thomas. Improvements were made on cell houses, boiler room, wall towers, administration building, chapel, band room, hospital, and also in the prison's athletic and social facilities.

Located in Lyon County near Eddyville, the Kentucky State Penitentiary is the state's only maximum security facility for convicted male felons. Many of its inmates work in various programs of the Division of Correctional Industries located at the prison. The institution provides academic and vocational classes, work programs, and institutional maintenance work. The penitentiary operates in accordance with KRS Chapters 196 and 197.

In 1884, the General Assembly appropriated money for the construction of Kentucky Branch Penitentiary at Eddyville, which was to house overflow from the Kentucky State Penitentiary in Frankfort. Construction of the institution continued for six years until it was officially opened in December, 1890. When the Kentucky State Penitentiary in Frankfort was renamed the Kentucky State Reformatory in 1912, the Kentucky Branch Penitentiary became the Kentucky State Penitentiary.
