Sander Levin, son of Saul Levin and Bess Levinson, was born in Detroit on Sept. 6, 1931. Both at Central High School in Detroit and at the University of Chicago, Levin was active in student government. He received a B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1952, a M.A. from Columbia University in 1954, and a L.L.B. from Harvard Law School in 1957. In 1957, he married Vicki Schlafer, and they had four children. He was a lawyer in Detroit before being elected to the State Senate in 1964, and served from 1965-70 as senator from the 15th District. He was a leader in the Democratic Party as well as in the State Senate. He ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1970 and 1974.
