Biographical notes:

Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan (born January 19, 1955) is a Northern Mariana Islander politician and former election commissioner. An independent caucusing with the Democratic Party, Sablan became the first delegate to the United States House of Representatives from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in 2009.

Born on Saipan, he attended Xavier High School in Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia before graduating from Marianas High School. He attended the University of Guam, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa but did not earn a college degree. Sablan served two terms in the Northern Mariana Islands Commonwealth Legislature from 1982 until 1986 as a Democrat. He thereafter served as a Special Assistant to Hawaiʻi Senator Daniel Inouye before returning to the CNMI to serve as Special Assistant for Management and Budget in the administration of Froilan Tenorio. He later served as a Special Assistant in the administration of Pedro P. Tenorio before being appointed Executive Director of the Commonwealth Election Commission, a position in which he served until he filed to run for delegate.

In 2008, Sablan chose to run as an independent for the new delegate office. In a nine-way race, Sablan won the 2008 election with 23 percent of the vote. He has been subsequently re-elected five times, running as a Democrat in 2010 and 2012 and an independent thereafter. During his six terms in office Congressman Sablan has been responsible for legislation increasing funding to Northern Mariana Islands schools and individual students, to the Commonwealth Healthcare Center, and for water and sewer projects in his district. He expanded federal food and energy assistance for low-income families in his district. His legislative work resulted in the return of ownership of submerged lands around the Northern Marianas to the people he represents.
