Biographical notes:

Julia Deane Freeman was a poet and author of Women of the South distinguished in literature (1865) using her pen name Mary Forrest. This anthology has helped scholars come to know many female 19th century poets that otherwise would have been left in obscurity, yet there is little known of Freeman herself.

Julia Blake Deane was born October 7, 1825 in Brookfield, Massachusetts, the daughter of Cyrus and Nancy Deane. She married John Freeman in Brookfield in 1844. Freeman had an active correspondence with Sarah Helen Whitman, a poet and essayist, as well as a one-time fiance of Edgar Allan Poe. Freeman died June 12, 1866 and was buried in Brookfield Cemetery, Brookfield, Massachusetts.
