History notes:

The Office of Development coordinates the activities related to alumni relations, public relations, and campus fund raising.

During the late 1940s and 1950s the functions of the Development Office seem to have been performed primarily by the Director of Publicity, the President of the College or by one of several faculty committees. By the mid 1960s the Assistant to the President in Charge of Public Affairs coordinated activities related to campus public relations, publications, and alumni relations. In addition, the Assistant to the President was the executive Secretary of the Foundation.

By the early 1970's these functions had been divided among several related offices. The Assistant Chancellor for Analysis and Development coordinated the activities of the Foundation, the Director of Development coordinated programs to enhance the financial resources of the institution, and the Director of Development coordinated programs to enhance the financial resources of the institution, and the Director of University Relations coordinated the activities of the Alumni Association and the public relations programs of the institution.

By 1976 the office also coordinated grant applications and expenditure of campus research funds. In 1983 that function was transferred to the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and University Research. Coordination of Foundation, Alumni Association, publicity, publications and fund raising activities was assigned to the Office of Development in 1985.
