Biographical notes:

Leo D. Shaffer was born in Altoona, Pa., ca.1904. He attended Soldiers' Orphans School, Chester Springs, Pa., and was graduated in 1922 from the Scotland School in Franklin County, Pa. Mr. Shaffer worked at various jobs in Pennsylvania and New York before moving to Detroit in 1930. From 1930 to 1934 he worked for Artic Dairy and Motor Products Company, and at Ternstedt from 1934 to 1941. In May, 1937 he joined the UAW and was a member of West Side Local 174. In December, 1941 he left Ternstedt for a job at Detroit Diesel Division where he helped to form UAW Local 163. Mr. Shaffer served Local 163 in various capacities: Committeeman, editor, member of the Education Committee, convention delegate, and President. He also served as Chairman of the Wayne County Retired Workers Council of the UAW.
