Biographical notes:

Robert Kanter was born August 5, 1906. After high school, he was employed at the Dodge Plant until 1932. From 1932 to 1936, Mr. Kanter worked at various jobs in the Detroit area. In 1936, he was hired by Cadillac, where he became interested in unionism. Kanter served as chairman of the Strike Committee during the Cadillac Sit-Downs of January, February, 1937. Soon after the sit-down, Kanter began working for the UAW International Union. Shortly afterwards, however, he worked for Local 174, from 1937 to 1939. During this period, Kanter took part in the Battle of the Over-Pass. In 1939, Kanter returned to the International Union, where he has been employed since. Among his duties was that of Director of the UAW Engineering Department from 1950 to 1956.
