Noted science fiction writer Frank Herbert was born in Tacoma, Washington, and attended the University of Washington. He began working as a journalist, served in the Navy during World War II, and returned to journalism after the war, when he began writing science fiction stories. After six years of research and writing, he published the award-winning novel Dune in 1965; the novel, which reflected his interests in ecology and the environment, went on to become one of the most influential and best-selling works in science fiction. Herbert continued to write science fiction novels, including five sequels to Dune.
