Biographical notes:
Joy Harjo (born Joy Foster, on May 9, 1951, Tulsa, Oklahoma) is a poet, musician, and author. She is a member of the Muscogee Nation. She studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts, completed her undergraduate degree at University of New Mexico in 1976, and earned an M.F.A. at the University of Iowa in its Creative Writing Program.
In 2019, Harjo was named the United States Poet Laureate. She is the first Native American to be so appointed. She is also the second United States Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to serve three terms.
