Biographical notes:
The duties of the Executive Director of the Board of Control were transferred to the Chancellor of the Board of Regents in 1965 (Ch. 63-204; Ch. 65-138, Laws). The Chancellor acts as chief administrator of the Board of Regents, which serves as Director of the Division of Universities in the Dept. of Education (Ch. 69-106, Laws). The Chancellor is responsible for the administration of the State University System of Florida; advises the Board of university issues and problems; supervises statewide studies, and makes recommendations for improving higher education.
Charles Bass Reed was born in Pennsylvania in 1941. He received a bachelor's degree in health and physical education, a master's degree in secondary education, and a doctor's degree in education from George Washington University. From 1971 to 1979, he held various administrative positions with the Dept. of Education. From 1979 to 1985, he served on the staff of Governor Bob Graham in various positions, including Education Policy Coordinator, Chief Legislative Adviser, Deputy Chief of Staff, and Chief of Staff. He was appointed Chancellor of the Board of Regents in 1985.
