Biographical notes:

Lyman Louis Lemnitzer (1899-1988) was born in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. He received his commission in the Coast Artillery Corps from West Point in 1920 and was an instructor at West Point from 1926 to 1930, and again in 1934 and 1935. He graduated from the Command and General Staff School in 1936 and the Army War College in 1940 and saw duty with war plans division and the staff of Army Ground Forces from May 1941 to June 1942. He reached the rank of brigadier general in June 1942, then major general in November 1944. His assignments after World War II included deputy commandant of National War College from August 1947 to October 1949 and numerous other commands during the Korean War. He was vice chief of staff, U.S. Army, from July 1957 to July 1959, chief of staff from July 1959 to September 1960, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from September 1960 to November 1962, commander of U.S. Forces in Europe from November 1962 to January 1963 and Supreme Allied Commander in Europe from January 1963 until his retirement in July 1969.
