Variant namesBiographical notes:
Ann Richards was born Dorothy Ann Willis in Lakeview, Texas. She graduated from Baylor University and eventually settled with husband David Richards in Austin, where she worked on many political campaigns and in 1976 was elected the first female Travis County (metropolitan Austin) Commissioner.
In 1982 Richards became the first female Texas State Treasurer. She received nationwide recognition for her 1988 keynote address at the Democratic National Convention.
