Lurleen Burns Wallace was born in 1927 near Tuscaloosa, Ala. She married George Corley Wallace on 1943 May 22. From 1963-1967 she served as first lady of Ala. under her husband's administration as governor. She ran for governor and was elected to office in 1966. She was inaugurated as the first woman governor of Ala. on 1967 January 16. Her primary contribution as governor was the improvement of the state mental health services and facilities through several mental health reforms. She had been treated for cancer in 1965, but a reoccurrance appeared in 1967 while she was serving as governor. She died on 1968 May 7 in Montgomery, Ala.
