Biographical notes:
Vernon Emil Martin, Jr. was born on December 15, 1929 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition from the University of Oklahoma, and a Master of Science in library science from Columbia University in 1965. Martin worked at Columbia University and New York Public Library before joining the faculty of North Texas State University as music librarian from 1966 until 1970. He then served as director of library services at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa until the end of 1974, and joined the Hartford Public Library from the beginning of 1975 until his retirement in 1993. Martin remained active as a composer while working as a librarian, winning multiple awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
