Biographical notes:
Joanna Gowens was born between 1802 and 1804 to Agnes who was owned by George Washington. Agnes was among the enslaved people who were freed by the terms in Washington's will in 1801. Agnes was the daughter of Joan, who was born enslaved to owner George Washington.
Joanna had two children, Catherine Gowens and Emily Gownens.
