Biographical notes:

Dr. Archibald D. "Doc" Galbraith was born in Chattsworth, Ontario, in 1876, the son of John and Elizabeth (Ross) Galbraith. He graduated from McGill Dental College, and immigrated to Butte, Montana, where he was naturalized as a United States citizen. In 1902 he married Gertrude Amelia Smith, who was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on November 28, 1874. Dr. Galbraith was a friend of William A. Clark, Jr., the son of the U.S. Senator and "Copper King", William A. Clark, Sr.

William A. Clark, Jr. was born in Deer Lodge, Montana, on March 29, 1877. He studied law at the University of Virginia, graduating in 1899. He practiced law in Butte, was president of the Elm Orlu Mining Company and of the Timber Butte Milling Company, and also owned several other Butte businesses, including several newspapers. In 1901, he married Mabel Foster, of Butte, who died in 1902 after the birth of their son. He married again in 1907, to Alice McManus Madin of Virginia City, Nevada. The Clarks resided primarily in Butte, frequently in Los Angeles, California, and sometimes in France. During the early part of his law career Clark, Jr. spent much of his leisure time gambling and drinking in such places as the Butte Hotel Pool Room, a favorite rendezvous for those who played the ponies.

Dr. Galbraith and W.A. Clark, Jr. collaborated in the purchase, training, and harness racing of horses (trotters) on the local racing circuit until 1907. Most of the races took place in Silver Bow, Montana, outside of Butte and during that time Dr. Galbraith performed most of the sulky riding himself, as a "gentleman driver". Dr. Galbraith died in Butte on February 20, 1913 and his wife Gertrude died in Seattle, Washington, on March 14, 1961. William A. Clark, Jr. died June 14, 1934 in Salmon Lake, Montana.
