Biographical notes:

The Department of Education of Oberlin College has its origins in the Teacher's Department of Oberlin Collegiate Institute, created in 1846. In 1903, the Department of Pedagogy, previously subsumed by the Philosophy Department, became independent; its name was changed to the Department of Education in 1909. The major in Education was available from 1911 to 1961/62. Those preparing for kindergarten, primary, or secondary teaching careers followed state guidelines for teacher certification. In June 1960, the Master of Arts in Teaching program for secondary school teachers was introduced, followed in 1964/65 by the M.A.T. Elementary program. Both programs were suspended in 1971, and in 1978, the Department of Education was discontinued.
