Annie Smith Peck was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1850, the daughter of George Batchelor Peck and Ann Power Smith. Well educated for a women of her times, she became a lecturer of Greek and Roman archeology and a mountain climber. She was an early feminist and was involved in the movement for women's rights. She wrote three books including: A Search for the Apex of America; The South American Tour; and Commercial and Industrial South America. She died on July 18, 1935 at the age of 84.
