British painter and author born in Plymouth, James Northcotein was taken in by Reynolds for five years, and studied in the schools of the Royal Academy, painting portraits. In 1777 Northcote went to Italy, where he copied masters' works for a living. He was elected fellow of the Academies in Florence, Cortona and Rome. Returning to London in 1780, Northcote painted mostly portraits.
