Biographical notes:

Underwood, an 1830 graduate of the University of Virginia, practiced law in Bowling Green, Kentucky. After serving in both houses of the Kentucky General Assembly, he won a seat in the U.S. Congress in 1855 as a candidate of the American Party. After two terms he retired and went to Scotland as Consul in 1862. Returning to America in 1864, Underwood practiced law in San Francisco, California until 1866, when he moved back to Bowling Green. He died there six years later.
