John Charles Allcot was born in Liverpool, England in 1888, and apprenticed as a lithographer and attended art classes at the Liverpool Institute and School of Art; he began working on various vessels, relocating to Sydney, Australia at age 21 where he worked on coastal and intercoastal vessels for several years, then began concentrating on painting and gained notoriety from a series of oil paintings on the founding of the Australian colonies; perhaps best known for being a painter of ships, he died in North Sydney, NSW, in 1973.
