AFL-CIO. Region 5.
Biographical notes:
The AFL was organized in 1881. In 1935, a group of AFL unions formed the Committee for Industrial Organization, were expelled by the AFL in 1937, and established the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in 1938. During the post World War II era, cooperation increased between the AFL and the CIO resulting in a 1955 merger of the two groups into the AFL-CIO. Restructuring in 1973 caused AFL-CIO Region 6 (Atlanta, Ga.) to be renumbered as Region 5. Region 5 of the AFL-CIO includes the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
