Biographical notes:

Mansfield Lovell (1822-1884) was a major general in the Confederate army who had been appointed to defend New Orleans when it fell to the Union navy. He then commanded an infantry division under Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn at the Second Battle of Corinth, Miss. He was later relieved of command as a consequence of his poor performance at New Orleans, although a court of inquiry later declared him innocent of charges of incompetence. Nonetheless, he was not given any assignments for the rest of the war.

Charles Magnus, [1826-1900], was a print publisher, map dealer, bookseller, and stationer working in New York City from 1850 to 1899 who issued over a thousand different letter sheets, maps, song sheets, envelopes, and separate prints. His best known works were city views and Civil War-related material. Much of his work was copied from other printmakers. He often altered or combined design elements from several sources, rarely crediting the original artist. Many of his works after 1865 were based on photographs, which he often altered, drawing in figures or re-drawing lines for clearer reproduction.
