Sidney Painter was born in New York in 1902, the son of Henry McMahon and Carrie Stevens Painter. He attended the Taft School in Watertown, CT and received his B.A. and Ph. D from Yale. Painter joined the Hopkins faculty in 1931. In 1945, he was promoted to full professor and appointed department chairman.
Painter's research focused on the political and social history of medieval England. His works included "A history of the English Feudal Barony" and "The Reign of King John." Painter died suddenly of a heart attack in January 1960. He was survived by his wife, Nivea Forbes Painter, and four daughters: Mrs. John Mathews, Ann Forbes Painter, Julie Elizabeth Painter, and Prudence Steel Painter.
