Rufus B. Sage wrote "Scenes in the Rocky Mountains," published by Carey & Hart in 1846, based on his experiences of traveling in the West. Martha P. Sage, Rufus' cousin, was a schoolteacher in northeast Pennsylvania.

Rufus B. Sage left his home in Middleton, Connecticut, in 1836 and moved to Marrietta, Ohio, where he engaged in the printing and newspaper buiness. In 1841 he traveled across the Plains to the Rocky Mountains and Oregon, traveling west twice and returning to Ohio in 1844. He wrote an account of his travels which was published in 1846 with the title, Scenes in the Rocky Mountains, and in Oregon, California, New Mexico, Texas, and the Grand Prairies.
