Biographical notes:

The Gorgas family came to the United States from Holland, having arrived by boat around 1688, and originally settling in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Gorgas descendents have lived in other states as well, such as Alabama, Ohio, and New York. Sarah Gorgas married Philip Dorsheimer in 1821 and in 1836 the couple moved to Buffalo. Dorsheimer's son William Edward Dorsheimer was Lieutenant Governor of New York, elected to Congress in 1882, and one of the founders of the Buffalo Historical Society. The donor of this collection, Michele Clifton, is a descendent of Charles Clifton, who was Chairman of the board of the Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company and first president of the national Automobile Chamber of Commerce; the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society has custody of the Clifton Family Papers (Mss. A65-11).
